Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
